Books for Guatemala

Here's the collection of books. I haven't counted but I imagine there is well over a hundred! Friends, family and mostly co-workers and students really came through.

The other good news is that Delta has waived a second bag fee for the three of us flying on that airline. But the extra bag can only weigh 50lbs. This is the challenge.

Pre-Trip

The trip is on. The group is smaller than expected, but I am happy. Two girls, two guys- Claudia, Kaileigh, Diego and Jonathan. Perfect for our travels, three hotel rooms, a small van to transport us. This is Global Service Learners first trip. It was a busy year of filing paperwork, recruiting, planning. Now, as my semester wraps up, I am allowed to think ahead, to visualize the trip. To worry.

Safety is my first concern. Honestly, I worry about the dumb accidents- the falling in holes, twisted ankles, and motor accidents. Secondly, is the petty crime. The stolen phones, backpacks, etc. Finally, is the big stuff, the zebras as doctors call it. The stuff that makes the paper- the hold ups, the drug gangs. But that is as much a concern on Crenshaw near campus.

I also have to put together material for our teaching. I have been collecting children's books. I sent an email to the campus and have had tremendous response. Too much in fact. Next week, the week before Christmas will be spent putting together curriculum.

But I am excited. Excited to travel, to improve my Spanish, to learn more about Antigua, the Maya. Excited to introduce students to a new land, to the joys of volunteer work.

My plan, like always is to document my thoughts. I'll be writing mostly on my phone, so bear with the random spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Typing by thumbs is not my specialty.

Bon Voyage.
